Scholastic Book Fair - Spring 2008
The PHMS Library is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from May 9 - May 16, 2008. All students will have the opportunity to visit the fair through their social studies classes. The book fair features many popular paperback and hardback books that are perfect for summer reading. In addition, the fair includes school supplies, journals, bookmarks, posters, and more! Prices for paperback books generally range from $2.99 to $6.99.
Parents are invited to stop by the fair in the library from May 9th to May 16th between the hours of 8:10 a.m. and 3:10 p.m.
Destiny is Here, and It's Been Upgraded!
Great news! Our students and staff are now able to access our library catalog from anywhere in the world using an Internet connection. Teachers can browse our catalog from their classrooms, and students can now search our library collection from the comfort of their own homes! Go to this link, and click on the Catalog tab! As a guest, anyone can have access to the search and browse features of the catalog.
We are excited about two recent upgrade features to our catalog that will help students in deciding which books to check out! The first feature allows students to click on a "Top Ten" link in order to view the current top ten titles (in terms of signout popularity) at PHMS. The second feature, accessible under the "Review" tab for each book, allows our students to see student reviews and ratings for our books that have been written by other middle school students. To see a sample of this feature, students can search for the book entitled Survival in the Storm by Katelan Janke.
If students login with their computer logins and passwords (by clicking on the login button at the top right of the Destiny screen), they will have access to actually do the ratings and write reviews for publication themselves.

Great News! On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, State Senator Kathy Klausmeier, and Baltimore County Director Jim Fish stopped by to present our students with a trophy that was awarded to PHMS for having the highest middle school participation in the Baltimore County Public Library Summer Reading program this year! Ms. Roxanne Gnau and Ms. Barbara Weiners from the Perry Hall branch of the public library were also on hand to help us celebrate our success. We are so proud of our students and so grateful to our parents for having provided the transportation and the encouragement to keep our students reading all summer long! |
The Fee-Based
Databases are Alive and Well!
Again this year and throughout the summer months, our students will have access to a wide variety of online databases, several of which offer full-text retrieval of magazine and newspaper articles as well as reference books, audio/video clips, pictures, maps, and TV/radio transcripts.
Through subscriptions licensed by BCPS, through the Maryland MDK-12 Digital Library Project, or through our own subscription, you have many high-quality databases to choose from! Click on this link for access information to the following databases:
- American History and World Geography (ABC-CLIO)
- Student Resource Center Junior
- World Book
- Science Resource Center
- BrainPop
- Science e-Books
- CultureGrams
- ProQuest Professional Education
- SIRS Discoverer
- SIRS Knowledge Source
- SIRS Decades
- Literature Resource Center
Remember that our students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to use these databases from home . A handout listing all login and password codes needed for this access from home are available in the library media center. This handout can also be found in the paper copy of the monthly school newsletter, PawPrints.
