"The School That Reads...Leads!"

Express Yourself this Summer!

bcpslog

This summer we are requiring our students who will be in grades 7 and 8 during the 2009 - 2010 school year to participate in our summer reading program by reading at least one book and obtaining a parent/guardian signature indicating that they have done so. (See Letter to Parents/Guardians (Word) (PDF).) As detailed in the parent letter, students may select any book of their choice that meets parental approval and are also welcome to make choices from their own personal lists or from the variety of reading lists that are available on this webpage (see links below). Printed lists of the 2009-2010 Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Book Award nominees for grades 4-6 and 6-9 will provide great choices for students who would like some specific recommendations. These printed lists will be available in the school office throughout the summer. Books may be borrowed from the Baltimore County Public Libraries or purchased at local bookstores.

Students will receive a paper copy of the Strive for Twenty-Five record list/log sheet (MS Word) / record list/log sheet (PDF) before they leave school for the summer. This will be located on the reverse side of the parent letter. Each student should record the title of the one book that he/she chooses to read for the summer reading requirement and have a parent/guardian sign on the appropriate line. This signature will be checked by the Language Arts teacher and will be due by October 1, 2009. Students are encouraged to record other books that they read over the summer of 2009 as well. Additional copies of this record list/log sheet will also be available in the school office during the summer. We hope that our students will enjoy at least one good book this summer, and hopefully, many more!

We are also encouraging our students to participate in the Baltimore County Public Library Summer Reading Program . This year, the public library has allowed online registration starting on May 11, 2009. Many of our soon-to-be seventh graders chose to register online with Mrs. Caldwell in our school library at the end of May. At this time, the student recorded user name and password for the program on a green half-sheet stapled to a purple flier that describes the program. If students misplace these papers, the Summer Reading volunteers at the public library should be able to help them obtain that user name and password. Click this link for a complete description of the program.

Please keep in mind that BCPL Summer Reading Program registration is not considered complete until the student visits a branch of the Baltimore County Public Library to pick up his/her summer reading packet on or after June 15th. As part of the program, students must complete and record 20 hours of approved activities in order to be able to enter the drawings for a $50 Target gift card, a Mini-Notebook PC, an Xbox 360 with Rock Band 2, Special Edition, and an iPod Touch 8 GB.

laptopSummer CyberSafety

Reading is cool, and cybersafety is SMART! Since we know that many of our students will be spending some of their leisure time on the Internet this summer, we are encouraging them to remain safe by practicing cyber-smart behaviors. The following links provide excellent information including learning activities and games to educate ourselves about how to stay safe when using the Internet.

Especially important is the issue of cyberbullying and how to avoid and/or stop it. Click on the following link to visit an additional site for more information about cyberbullying:
