The Superintendent's Gallery: East Zone Exhibition BALTIMORE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS | 2022 East ZONE EXHIBITION GRADES K-12

The Superintendent’s Gallery, which launched in the Spring of 2021, builds on the long history of exhibitions of student artwork at the Greenwood Administration Building. This community space honors the legacy of student artistic voice and the legacy of leadership in BCPS. The Superintendent’s Gallery features rotating exhibitions of student artwork accompanied by a virtual gallery. The virtual gallery features written and video artist statements from students and can be found on the Office of Visual Arts Website.

The on-site exhibition features 24 juried student artworks from the East Zone of the district, while this virtual exhibition includes over 100 artworks. The artworks in this exhibition were completed by students since the start of the 2022 school year and reflects their creativity, opportunities for personal expression, motivations, and eagerness to get into the studio to start making artwork with their peers. The power of art continues to carry us through challenging times, and we are so happy and proud of our students engaging with the creative process to create their masterpieces.

The artworks appearing here in "spreads" were selected to be featured at the Superintendent's Gallery at Greenwood Mansion in Towson, Maryland. These artworks will be on display at this location until January 2022.
"City Collage" by Amaraiah Walabai at Glenmar Elementary School, Kindergarten
I made a town with houses. I used triangles for the rooftops. I used rectangles for the buildings and squares for the windows and lots of colors. I have a little building. It is little because it is far away. I also made a bridge to walk over a pond. I like art because I like painting and gluing. I like making paintings about germs.
"Soaring in Art " by Teagan Smith at Fullerton Elementary School, Grade 1
"Celebrating Sunflowers" by Makenzie Hall at Battle Grove Elementary School, Grade 2
"Fall Leaf Watercolor" by Jacob Portillo Gonzalez at Glenmar Elementary School, Grade 2
I started my leaf painting by drawing the outline of the leaves, then when I was done I painted the leaves to make them look realistic, then I painted the background blue to make it look like they were falling from the sky. I like art because you can draw stuff and you can even paint.
"Red House" by Delilah Maddox-Chilton at Chase Elementary School, Grade 2
"I'm In the Orange House" by Junior Herrera Martinez at Chase Elementary School, Grade 2
"My First Concert" by Raelyn Clark at Logan Elementary School, Grade 3
I made a picture with cloth. This is an important memory to me because it was my first concert.
"The Beach" by Keniyah Banks at Logan Elementary School, Grade 3
I made a quilt. I made it by coloring and quilting. This is an important memory to me because my family always go to the beach.
"Catbird" by Nora Poudel at Perry Hall Elementary School, Grade 3
"Pop Art Name Design " by JaBrae Thomas at Glenmar Elementary School, Grade 5
My name is JaBrae and I want to talk about my art and how I got the details and what inspired me to make my art look like the way I made it. First when I was young, I went to the museum and there were powerful pictures of art and when we did nice projects in school at art it was easy because seeing arts and practicing making them. My progress was really getting to where I wanted it to be. I also have a fun and great art teacher. She makes the projects fun and wanted to be done so I want to thank her. When I’m at home I still make art crafts because its calming and peaceful. In the art piece that I made I made my name jumbo. I used two different colors and added dots and made a starburst and there were red dots around it. My name was in the starburst, and on the starburst my name looks 3D to me. I like art because it lets you express yourself and who you really are and it keeps you in a safe space. When I’m upset or mad, I calm myself and make art with my feeling and when I’m done I smile because I’m not upset anymore because I let them feelings go and art makes me happy and that’s why I like doing it. Thanks for picking me to introduce myself and writing an artist statement and writing how I feel about art, HAVE A GOOD DAY.
"TBD" by Autumn Taylor at Perry Hall Elementary School, Grade 5
"Pumpkin Value Drawing" by Savanna Adams at Holabird Middle/STEM School, Grade 5
"The Shining Night" by Vanessa Lyons at Middle River Middle School, Grade 7
In this artwork, I was inspired by the beauty of the night. I designed a painting to express the beauty of it. I painted trees, bushes, mountains, stars, and clouds. I painted vibrant trees with the moon shining on them. I painted mountains with the light of the moon beaming on them. I used acrylic paints, I used the colors dark blue, yellow, black, white, and light brown. I used a painting canvas: 12x14.I used principle of texture by showing the textures of the trees and grass. I showed the beauty of the night with my Landscape. I feel like my work was very well made because it looks together. Overall, I showed my skills by making my landscape neat and detailed.
"Still Life with Shoe Form" by Lauren Moran at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 7
"Still Life" by Abigail Di Liberto at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 7
"Personal Mandala" by Michell Nwachukwu at Golden Ring Middle School, Grade 8
"Elegance" by Autumn Li at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 8
The objects I selected for my personal still life are a glass bottle, a miniature Eiffel tower key chain, a porcelain canary, a ribbon, and a pearl bracelet. The reason why I selected these particular objects is because they are decorations and add beauty to plain settings. I created an interesting composition by placing the objects in a certain way so that they touch the edges of the paper and the focal point is located at the ribbon and porcelain bird. I selected colored pencils and applied techniques to show light and form by adding cast shadows and highlights to objects. A major challenge I encountered is capturing the transparency in the glass bottle, but I solved this by carefully observing a photograph and including some hints of the color of the table and ribbon on the glass.
"Miscellaneous" by Kayli Nally at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 8
I chose my leather gauntlet, amethyst, X-acto knife, and scissors for my still life that I call Miscellaneous. I set my objects up so that some would overlap, be cropped by the edge of the paper, or set some spread out so that I could create a better illusion of size. I used charcoals and would set a base coat color and then add shadows and highlights. I made my shading very exaggerated which will create more depth and form, as well as attract more attention. The amethyst had looked too pale compared to the other objects, so I darkened the shadows and brightened the highlights. The table that the objects are on had too strong of a wood grain and so I used a tissue and rubbed some of the pigment off.
"Valuable Collection" by Iheoma Onukwugha at Dundalk High School, Grade 11
I was inspired by an anime I enjoy, One Piece, to create this narrative of the three lanterns guiding the trapped ship that is trying to escape the cursed vase. In this narrative I am focused on the idea that these overwatching lanterns and candles offer a sense of light and security to the other objects used and to the viewer. I used watercolor paint and aggressively applied it, along with dry tissue, for the glass of the bottle and lanterns to show an act of agency in the movement being created even though I am using inanimate, and seemingly unrelated objects.
"Celtic Roots" by Emma Walsh at Sparrows Point High School, Grade 11
My piece has been through a long and extensive process of getting the right composition. When making it, I wanted to capture the fierceness of the figure. A lot of her personality was in the hair, so I made the hair the focal point of the piece. I also added Celtic braids to her hair to give her personality and identity. Around the figure, there is a lot of negative space, which was intentional to give the figure a lot of room to exist freely within the paper. This space coincides with her free spirit.
"Shoes That Hold My Determination" by Casey Walker at Kenwood High School, Grade 12
My artwork “Shoes That Hold my Determination” Involves my personal Kobe basketball shoes entangled and framed by the net of a basketball goal. To create this photo, I needed a good angle, a little athleticism, and help from friends. After I gave my friend the shoe, I had to jump and grab the rim, then hang on until my friend gave me the shoe for me to place it in the correct spot. It was definitely a task! Looking at my photo you can clearly see that I have a connection with basketball. But I wanted to show that in a new perspective. I feel that my photo turned out better than I could imagine. What was a whim turned out to have an amazing result with the light coming in at the best angle. This project of mine will always remind me to follow my instincts and pursue every new idea.
"Winslow Homer Seascape" by Jason Brooks at Maiden Choice School, Grade 12
I learned how Winslow Homer’s color choices and use of line in his seascapes can indicate different weather conditions at sea. I am visually impaired and listened to descriptions of Homer’s seascapes to determine if they represented storms at sea. I made color choices and used watercolors to paint the sky. I turned my brush around in a circle to paint the setting sun. Then I used both hands to tear painted paper. I liked the noise the paper made when it tore. After that, I glued the paper onto my painting. The big pieces of paper represent big waves. Finally, I learned about origami and helped press and fold a paper square to turn it into a sailboat that is out at sea, braving a storm.
"The Chinning" by Jayline Rivera at Patapsco High School, Grade 12
My work explores my self- portrait through the things I love as a way to express myself. Ever since I was little I’ve been fascinated by nature and its textures. This is why I use acrylic paint and cornstarch to create texture and build vibrant colors.
"Obsessed" by Aniah Johnson at Chesapeake High School, Grade 12
My piece was created based off things that I really like, one of the main things being jewelry. The idea of someone putting entirely too many rings onto their hands can give the idea of an obsession. I used two LED strip lights in order to take the two photos. The set up was simply a large variety of rings, necklaces, and bracelets scattered on a table with cloth in on. The picture on the top involved me using a led strip light on either side with the colors red and blue. While post-processing, or in photoshop, I used an editing style called solarization, which in a way reverses the color of the image, explaining the gold like color in the back. The picture at the bottom is a combination of two photos, one photo was mostly red and the other was mostly blue, this post-processing technique is called a composite image.
